We just got a new computer and it has Vista on it. I can't compare and contrast the differences between the two, but I do know that XP has been fraught with bugs and a lot of people hate it.

It seems that all the new computers in the stores are loaded with Vista, rather than XP. So in that regard, it will become obsolete simply because when a new OS comes out, the new computers come loaded with that instead of the older one. But until yesterday, we were using Windows 98 (?) without any problems, so if you have XP, everything you want to do should still be able to be done without any problems.

Yes, XP will become obsolete. When I went shopping for a laptop I could only find Vista machines. I am finding that I like Vista better, but it took a little bit of work to get everything to work right. (Such as playing .mpg's) I'm so glad that my dh knows how to do this stuff. We didn't have any problem with any of our devices (printers, cameras, etc.)

We are running both right now. Vista is very pretty. I am mainly using XP though. I don't think it is we obsolete in the near future, but I am not at all informed of such things. I know that I don't have XP at work and it runs fine.

Best!

I personally love Vista. The week it came out, I upgraded every machine (all 5) in the house. I have 2 running Vista Business and 3 running Vista Ultimate.

There were some troubles getting peripherals to work with Vista because of drive compatibility issues. I had to buy a new video card for one of the machines. I had to download SPs for most of my development environments to work correctly (Visual Studio and SQL Management Studio).

But, I love it and hate having to work on an XP machine when I'm at a clients' site.

The main complaint I hear from my clients is they hate having to verify they are actually initiating an action on the computer. I, personally, love that feature. I *like* knowing if someone is trying to download something to my computer without my knowledge.

If you are getting a new computer, I would go with one that has Vista installed, but try not to buy at the very low end of the machine specs, as Vista does not run well and does not run with all the pretty bells and whistles on a low horsepower machine. If you have an older computer I would not upgrade to Vista, as it is a resource hog.

I don't know about the NEAR future but I'd be willing to bet it will be phased out like all the other versions of windows have been yk?
My puter is still running XP but Dave's and the kids have Vista (is that even at ALL fair?)and it's nice. It's got lots of cool features that XP doesn't have.
I'd say go for Vista!

I'm using Vista now and am really liking it. My only issue now is that I can't open Word Docs. Anyone have any advice about that? I need them opened for the girls school work and have been out of luck.

Are you getting some kind of error message? What version of Office do you have on the machine?

My DH (who is a software engineer) doesn't think that XP will become obsolete. He says that more programs are still being made for XP than for Vista.

I've also heard that a lot of people are switching back to XP from Vista. I know Dan refused to buy Vista at this point since we have XP and it's looking more reliable, at least for now.

Thank you all for posting.

I feel somewhat more confused now then when I asked... lol

I have XP now and to be honest, I don't even KNOW what a properly running computer looks like. I don't put alot of demands on mine, so the more simple, the better.

I like to open e mails, download pics from my camera, listen to downloaded lectures, ummm... that's about it. Nothing too fancy and complicated.

The deciding factor isn't really "which is better?" . . . it's "What will your hardware run?" Vista has much more robust needs than XP. What are the specs of the machine in question - available RAM, processor, type of video card, hard drive interface (IDE vs. SATA) . . . ask those questions, before you ask what sort of OS to install on it.

My dad works PT for a local (to him) computer place and they prefer and recommend XP over vista at this time. They're a Microsoft certified company, if that makes a difference.

Ok...I can't find the email that had the word doc but basically it said something about the program not being found. Someone told me today that many computers with Vista don't have Microsoft Word installed. I snooped around my computer and sure enough, no MW. I was given a thirty day trial disk today from someone who had to buy it for his laptop to use for school. Apparently I can then buy it from the school for $59.00.

It sucks because Madison just got in trouble from her teacher (She's assigned a teacher through her virtual academy) because we couldn't open a doc and we are suppose to fill something out. We got an email telling her that she won't get credit for her work until we *fix* our *problem*.

Gah.

Try downloading openoffice for free (openoffice.org) - it's supposed to be compatible to MS programs.

Yeah, I don't recall MS Word ever coming with a Windows Operating System. When I've installed XP in the past I've always had to install MS Office on top of it. So I don't think that's any different. Open Office is a good idea if you can't get your hands on a copy of Office.

I'm sticking with XP personally too - in fact, we combed the Dell Outlet site for XP laptops for the girls, when we bought them recently (there weren't a lot still available!) Vista pleases a lot of people, and if you have the right hardware for it, fine - but I've had a lot of clients interested who didn't realize it would necessitate a big hardware upgrade, too.

wait, wait, wait. hold the horses. I've been using you as an example of someone who wholeheartedly made the switch to Vista and loved it (not being aware of Erika's predilection and besides, it's not like she posted about the machines she built to run it... with pictures!) and let me tell you, there are precious few people in my circle of whom I can say this! You were, in fact, my only example of such a person. And now I find that you're secretly harboring an XP machine....

I shake my head at you... :p

Sorry, you've got me confused with someone else LOL! I tried one Vista install and it did not end well, though in Vista's defense there were hardware problems I never ever managed to solve. I've got (ahem) five XP machines.

This is me too. I asked DH and he chose to not get MS Office. Grr. I can't open my kids' scouting calendars. I'm off to try Lynn's suggestion! :)
