I haven't heard yet if Mirena is covered at all yet but I have the option of using Implanon. Is there any reason this isn't a good option for me?

I'm sorry, I don't have any experience with it at all, or even know anyone who used it.

How well do you otherwise tolerate hormonal BC? I know I would be a really poor candidate because of my immune issues - implanting something foreign in a body that won't even recognize Self as safe from attack, is a Bad Bad Idea LOL!

BUT, the mirena is a foreign object as well...just a different location.

For my own body . . . it does make a difference whether the foreign body is simply sitting in a cavity that has its own epidural layer meant for protection, or whether it's embedded in tissue with no such protection. For example, I can use tampons and a Keeper (well, Mooncup) without consequence. A tattoo would be out of the question, because it's a foreign substance right in the tissue of my body. An IUD sits in the hollow of your uterus and (hopefully! Although I know we have YAAPSters with experience to the contrary . . .) does not actually embed. To me - and for my health - that is a hugely important distinction. But this is about you and what you tolerate, and it may be perfectly compatible for you. Have you been on the pill before? Did you tolerate that level of hormone?

I have to say that having it put in my arm makes me a little sqeemish. It does beat getting pregnant at this time though. I have to do something semi-permanant or sex will just never be fun. lol

I've never heard of Implanon, but I was curious and Googled it and read the patient information sheet. Nothing jumped out at me as "red flag!" if you're ok with doing hormonal birth control.

I always wonder about how drugs on any sort affect breastfeeding, so I went over to Hale's website and read that progestogen (sp?!?!) only b.c. is usually safe/no issues for the vast majority of BFing mothers, but that for a *few* sensitive mothers it *may* adversely affect their milk supply.

Food for thought. I don't really know much about birth control options other than FAM or condoms, but it does suck royally that your choices are so severely limited by your health insurance!

well, we did find some coverage from our drug card...I had originally forgotten to check there because the dr's office was checking it and came back with "your insurance doesn't cover any family planning." I freaked out and then calmed back down. LOL

Anyway, the implanon IS progesterone only so should be safe...I do want SOMETHING because condoms just freak me out. I got preg with D using a condom. Then I went 5+ years using fam. At this point I really dont want any oopsies. :)

I remember a lot of women having bleeding issues with the Norplant. If you don't have problems with hormonal birth control, you may do fine with it. I'm personally disillusioned with BC right now. I just can't do hormones. After 2 years of hoping my issues with Mirena would go away, I just had mine removed.

it is like norplant in the way it is inserted but she told me that they aren't seeing the same bleeding issues with this one.
