My pedometer is broken, and I can't get a new one as I don't have enough Kinder Egg tokens yet :)

If I run for 20 minutes non-stop at a slow but dogged pace, how far am I running? A bit of a how long is a piece of string question I know, but I run a roundabout route through town, doubling back on myself and so on.

The reason I know my pedometer is broken is because after 20 minutes running I was apparentely only doing 1/10 of a mile.

Any ideas?

I don't know if the streets in your area are on Google maps, but you could try this: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

My guess that "slow but dogged" is 11-12 mins per mile. IMO, it is best to think about time, rather than distance. But, then sometimes I switch, because it is fun to tell people that you ran 5 miles.

Best!

Oh, and when I was running (it has been awhile, because of snow and laziness) I would run an hour and chalk that up to 5 miles.

Best!

According to Diet.Power Exercise log....

20 minutes of running in place (140 strides per minute) = 706 cal
But I have no idea what a stride is :(

OR

Running 5 mph (12 minutes per mile) = 104 cal

I would probably peg "slow but dogged" at around 12-13 minutes per mile - a little slower than Margaret (but hey, I'm short!).

But I agree that distance/speed doesn't really matter much. What you want to aim for is a certain amount of minutes with your heartrate working in the right zone.

Here's a great website that talks about what you want to aim for (I linked to the "workout mistakes" page because that's what I have bookmarked, but that one links to a bunch of useful articles)

Thank you! I tried the pedometer.com, but my town's streets don't appear. I
want to know how far I am going as in May I want to do a 4km (2.5 mile) race. Small fry, I know, but it's a start. If I am half way there now, I feel more confident.

Oh you are definitely at least halfway there, probably more!
