I just signed up and paid for a 5K race on July 20th in Albuquerque. It has an unfortunate name, but looks like it will be fun. It's in a nice part of town and I think it's fairly flat and at a lower elevation than I have been running at here in Santa Fe. I have butterflies in my stomach just thinking about it though!! But I already paid and I can't waste my money right?
Any suggestions or pep talks?

Since me running a 5k is kinda inconceivable :P, I have nothing to add as far as any tips :). But I think it is WONDERFUL you are doing this!

Go, you!!! I want to do that too, a little further into my fitness reclamation. And wow, a summer race - whoa, I won't even do that on Cape Cod, nevermind the Southwest.
You can't dangle that Unfortunate Name in front of us, and not share! I mean, how bad is it? I'm thinking an appropriate race for me would be the Dragging Your Limp Ass After Two K's Race.

HURRAY, Niri, good for you!! I think that is awesome. Do you have a running/walking partner to do the race with? That would be my only suggestion. You'll do it, and you'll feel great about it. :cheer:
I'm curious about the unfortunate name of the race.

YOU can do it!! You really really can!! Even if you aren't running the whole way, you will finish! :-) :congrats: I need to find one around here and finally bite the bullet.

My suggestion is that you tell us what it's called, even if you have to separate out the letters with asterisks to make it non-searchable.
Good luck! You'll do great!

LOL!!! I didn't intend to leave you all hanging about the name, I thought I had cut and posted the link to the information about it. It's called the Chunky Monkey Run. Not a good name, huh? The same running store hosts another race in September that I could run a 10K in called the Chips and Salsa run. :shockfunny: The only saving grace of the Chunky Monkey Run is that they serve Ben & Jerry's at the finish.
Of course, then my first race shirt will say Chunky Monkey with their silly little logo on it. I think I need to run some gung ho race so I can get a gung ho t-shirt. :yay:

So I actually ran 5K this morning. WOW! I am impressed with myself. I didn't get to run all weekend when we were camping so I was feeling like I wouldn't be able to run the race this coming weekend (AAAK!), but I did it this morning and my legs feel like jelly. Here's a map of my route.

Congratulations!! That is really awesome! I'm really amazed at anyone who can run any distance greater than a mile or so, because I worked very, very hard at it, and never did make much progress. Maybe after I lose my weight it will be more doable. But anyway, go you!

Yikes! I think I didn't post clearly. I didn't actually run a 5K race, just ran the distance that a 5K race is - 3.11 miles. My race is on Sunday and I am *FREAKING OUT* about it and thinking of chickening out. I went out for a run last night and I just could not go the distance that I will need to run on Sunday.
I can do it, right?? Anyone want to come and cheer me on? I am so nervous!!

You can do it! Don't worry about not making it last night - you've done it once already and when you get to the race, you'll have a lot of adrenaline and excitement from those around you.

Oh, no biggie on the misunderstanding - that is STILL a huge accomplishment! I wish I could be at the finish line for you, wow! Make sure someone gets a picture of you, okay?

You're awesome! You've got this I'm sure of it! I didn't realize 5K = 3.11 miles... How long does it take? (one of these days I'll learn to run)

I didn't think that your post said that you had run the race, but wondered (by the other replies) if I was wrong. LOL!
It's today?? Woohoo!!!
You'll do great...and if you can't run it all, then you can walk some, right?
Update when you are done!!!
You rock!!! :yay::grouphug:
