View Full Version : Speaking of 10yos, is it unusual for them to hold hands with a parent?...

I just thought of this yesterday. I was doing some stuff downtown with C and when we were walking around, he just very unselfconsciously reached to hold my hand as we walked. It felt very sweet to me. At this point, obviously it's not about safety. It was kind of funny because he's such a big kid, almost my height.

then i couldn't remember when K stopped holding hands with a parent in public. I have no idea.

This was just a silly thing I was thinking about yesterday.

Especially in parking lots or crossing streets, or when we are in a crowd or even just walking. Of course, he's my snuggler, he still likes to sit in my lap, or lounge against dh when watching TV or reading together.

Sophia refused to hold hands after about 8 or so.

Both my girls are still hand-holders. Obviously it happens less often with my 14 yo but it still happens. :hearts:

Angus still holds my hand. I agree about it feeling very sweet. :hearts: He doesn't seem to be self-conscious about hugs, hand holding or even his nickname. He also still calls me 'Mommy', which he HAS been teased about.

My 9.5yo holds my hand in public still. :-)

Heck, I remember going for a walks with my mom when I was 16 and holding onto her arm!

We hold hands lots. She's also at the perfect height to walk with our arms around each other's waists, and she really likes that, for some reason!

He is totally un-self-conscious about it.

W. won't hold my hand though, unless we are crossing a street and I tell him he has to.

Miya always holds my hand. For that matter, Madison still does too
A couple of weeks ago I took Joshua to the store and as we walked away from the van I was distracted and didn't reach over for his hand. He huffed to himself "Ahem! I guess she does not want to hold my hand."

hold my hand in public. Not terribly much, but occasionally. She'll hold hands with dh too. And her best friends.

F doesn't like to hold my hand and only does if I "force" him to (like if we are on a super busy street or in Disney there were a couple of times I made him). He hardly ever actually stays right by me though, he's always wandering off or checking things out. He does like to snuggle with me on the couch though.

Baylee still holds my hand!! Patrick stopped around age 8 :( and I was just recently thinking it made me sad to think he physically withdrew, it's so hard to even get a hug out of the kid. Both girls still hold my hands though.

my 8- and 10-year olds will hold my hand for a few minutes in public, then break away, then go back to it...it's like they do it without thinking, then have a moment of 'i'm too cool for this'-ness, then a minute later they forget and go back to it again...LOL

otoh I have a hard time getting my 2-year old and 4-year old to hold my hand!

My 8 yo sometimes holds my hand in public. My 4 yo does too but a lot of the time in parking lots he insists on not holding hands and just walking next to me. I'm ok with that but usually talk to him the whole time about staying right by me and not running so he can be safe in the parking lot.

and sits on my lap. I'm sure part of this is sensory, he loves human contact. He's not very huggy w/anyone else. He seems to be going through a phase where all he wants is me. Kind of like a baby. I admit, though, that I love it, because someday he might not want to be close to me.

she's a super physically affectionate kid though - she has friends who would never be caught holding hands with their parents. :(
I don't think *I* held my mom's hand at this age, but then my mom wasn't a physically affectionate parent like I am so maybe that had something to do with it, I don't know.

J. will hold hands with me for (VERY!) short periods of time. He probably wouldn't do it at school, but he does it in the Target parking lot!:loveit:

Emma is only 6, but we only insist she hold our hand when crossing the street.

Still, more often than not, she'll hold our hand just because she likes to. I love it.

I hope she is doing it when she's 10.. and older.

I love it when I see others do it. Just something sweet and wonderful about it.

Abel holds my hand sometimes, only of his own free will!

If I try to hold his hand, he refuses, but if I wait for it, he'll take my hand when we're walking around, or sitting around the house. It's so sweet when it happens :)

I'm sure ds was holding his dad's hand at 10yo and older. I can remember dh mentioning to me that he wondered how much longer it would last. I can't remember how old he was when he quit doing it.
My girls weren't ever big on holding our hand unless they had to.

I think it depends on the child. Nick probably stopped seeking out my hand around age 6. Camille, 8, still seeks out my hand, and it wouldn't surprise me if she was still doing so at 10.

and we still have our secret "squeeze three times" handshake which means i love you and then the other one replies with 4 squeezes which of course means i love you too :-) It's less likely to happen when we are at her school but happens ver often when we are out & about generally.

But he is my highest physical need child. My 9 year old has never held my hand fo anything beyond safety.
