Elizabeth score an 87% on the end of year third grade (regular ed, and the grade she's in) assessment in reading comprehension! :yay::yay::yay:

Her decoding and encoding skills are still behind. BUT BUT in my head this score shows me she CAN compensate, and pull the meaning out of the text. And if it is a funny story or something that interests her she CAN enjoy reading. She's learning, she's getting there. Now I just hope and pray that her fourth grade Sped and Regular ED teachers are as wonderful as her third grade ones!!

I have been thinking a lot about the "basics" of reading writing LDs. I recently realize that *my* encoding and decoding skills are BAD, really BAD! I am constantly calling over my should to DH "How do you spell....?" Or if I need to say it out loud "How do you pronounce.....?" They have gotten better with trying to help Elizabeth. I've basically learned the 44 phonemes. But once I started reading to myself, no one (including myself, because I could remember how to spell most words, but it took a lot of concentration) knew I might have an LD (probably mild Dyslexia, like my Dad and sister but theirs are more severe.)

But I manage/managed just fine. I was in honors English. I hate to say it, but I used to get paid to write my brother's and his friend's book reports. I did well in my college writing class (A/B, UMass Lowell had a funny grading system) AND I love love to read.

I can see this path clearly for Elizabeth, she may have struggles, but she will either overcome them or compensate for them along the way. And so far she's had wonderful people along the way WANTING to help her because she's so stinkin' lovable!. :-)

3rd grade was a GREAT year!!

That's fantastic! It sounds like she's pushing past her early difficulties. And how awesome that her teachers appreciate who she is and what she's capable of.
