View Full Version : Google Map of YAAPSTERS?

EDITED TO ADD THIS: I did a little tutorial, you can see it here: GoogleMap Quickie Tutorial (http://www.screencast.com/t/d5EiYGdrTPS)
It's a bit big, 4 minutes, so hopefully everyone can watch it. If not, I'll try to do a smaller one. You'll need the latest version of Flash (most should).
EDITED TO ADD THIS: Put your marker within a radius of your home (10 miles, 100 miles, 500 miles) not close to your actual home address!

So, I was thinking, with the introductions getting confusing for me. Who's who and where and what, Google Maps would be fun and helpful.

So I started one here. (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=109676845711291699211.0004464d151da61ec7b94&ll=41.771312,-99.492187&spn=48.026222,68.115234&z=4)

I thought it'd be fun for us to put pointers where we are (general town or even just area) or certain places we've been that we thought others might be interested in.

I've added three locations as examples. The city we live in with a photo of Emma and Guy campaigning for their respective candidates (yes, Emma is adamant about hers) and a link to my Yaaps profile. A picture of alaska from our cruise there and a link to a picture of our rental property in Hawaii. The possibilities for sharing are endless !

I'm going to make it 'collaborating' so whoevers interested can add their own spots. I'll need you to PM me with your email address though so I can email you the ability to edit and add and play around.

Just thought I'd see if this takes off. I can invite those who want to and they then can invite other YAAPSTERS who later want to.

Could be fun.

OH, BTW... I've made it private so it can't be seen from my google profile nor searched. Just want to keep it "YAAPSTERS".

I would love to add ours, but I don't know how.

you need to PM me with your email address and I'll invite you to be an collaborator.

It's the only way I think you can do that... it'll have to be a 'invite' thing where I invite some Yaapsters and they invite other Yaapsters.

Ok. :-) I'll see if I'm technical enough to post pictures like yours. I liked seeing your pictures. I laughed myself off the chair when I saw your dh and dd campaigning. I'll pm you my email.

when you put a spot marker in a place (there are a list of icons to choose from!), there is a little 'picture' icon that lets you add a photo (but you have to have the photo already on the internet (like flickr, your server, etc), so it's relatively simple.

Thank you! I have such a hard time remembering where everyone lives (general directions - who is on the East coast? Who lives in the Midwest? Who was close to that big storm recently?), so this should be helpful. I didn't pin myself exactly where we live (and wouldn't suggest anyone else gives an exact location, either), but close enough to figure things generally.

Gargoyle
02-16-2008, 05:33 PM
ROFL ok I'm so bad I can't even figure out how to add a marker. Um you wanna just add a marker for me? LOL I was going to put one in Everett, WA for where we currently live and then one on Oahu for where we're moving.

You are wonderful. Thank you so much. LOL I swear, I stared at that map for a long while, asked dh who of course gave it half a second before he had to get back to his computer game and said, "I don't know."

That's perfect. Thank you. :)

Yeah, the general rule I have for internet info is NO NUMBERS! no house address, no phone number, no SS# (of course), if it has a number in it, it's probably not good to make it public on the net.

I'd just make it 'general' location. If you don't want to say the town, someone could put a marker on Denver and say "near denver" or "in Colorado"

Why was I able to edit it? (I'm so arrogant I just assumed I could without even reading this!)

Also, could we make this a sticky so that as it builds people can go back to see it. I actually think I could place a lot of people on this map! I want to check to see if that's right! :-) (See, showing my arrogance again! :) )

GOOD question... I thought I had to invite you to edit. :hmmm:

But since it is private and I put the link here, maybe that's all I need to do.

I'd love to see this as a sticky :D and get everyone on board :D

I didn't need an invite to add mine. Just click edit and then right click where you want your marker and select "add a marker" from the tab that pops up. From there you can edit it or even delete it if it's not right where you wanted it. :loveit:

Crap, I went back to look at the map and noticed there are a couple of 'cinnamons' in addition to the one (I thought I) put in the right place.

Er, I *thought* I knew what I was doing. :embarass:

I live in Richmond, VA. The other markers in, uh, Greenland or Timbuktu or wherever the hell they are :razzberry: are not right. Sorry. hee hee, I like this one: :bricks:

LOL, I saw those. I put "Cinnamon" in the title (if you don't put your name in the 'title' area, it shows up as 'marker 17' or some such).

I wasn't sure if you lived in upper alaska in the summers or not ;)

I'll delete those not in Richmond Virginia :D

I beat you to it! (I think. Er, hope.)

oooooh, I would *SO* love to summer in upper Alaska. Totally not kidding. Even the mere thought of most cruises makes me want to poke myself in the head with a fork, EXCEPT for the idea of an Alaskan cruise. Now that would be lovely.

you did :).

I have to tell you, our Alaska cruise (I put a photo in!) was amazing. We went with Emma and Guy's parents. It was a "Rosie" cruise. Great entertainment... Melissa Etheridge, Cyndi Lauper (she walked right up to emma and sang and danced with her!, Sesame St. Gang for the kids, Rosie standup, (someother famous comedian I can't remember his name ;), fun side trips, whales/eagles/seals/dolphins/etc etc, etc.

We don't like cruises generally, but this was a trip of a lifetime.

When you are adding yours, if you click on the icon on the top right, it will give you a choice of icons. I used a camera for our vacation photo, a bed for our vacation rental, and one of those weird bubble things for our home. YOu can use what ever you want. tacks are there!

Yes... SOOO sorry, I figured out why it was allowing anyone to edit and set it back to private.

Not thinking.

If you sent an email you SHOULD have gotten an invite from me.

ALSO, remember, whoever is now an invited collaborator can also invite others. It's not just me being the queen of the ball :D

Sorry about that, I hope it didn't erase already edited spots. I just thought we might want it to be at least a little private. Basically, this way if you are reading the boards you can be a part of it, but not just anyone off the street can add stuff.

I could make it editable by anyone without an invite if people think that's better

You need a photo housed somewhere. YOu could upload it to Flickr or your own server. Then...

click 'edit', then put the marker where you want. At the top of the box there is are links that say "text" "rich text" and "html". Click "rich text" (you could also do html, but with richtext you don't need to know html).

Then click the little image icon. It will give you a place to put the image URL. I put in
http : // www. lathefamily . org/ images/ guyemma . jpg (space not included) and that image appears! Then just click save and/or done.

Voila.

If you don't have a flikr account or something like it, I can always help you house a few photos.

Thank you! I was clicking "html" and trying to link in the image, and it wasn't working - but it was. You just can't see it when you're still in "edit" mode - you have to click "done."

Your way is even easier - it never occurred to me that "rich" text would give me the little icon like here in the forums.

Phew! Thanks!
