This poll is to put to vote the idea of having a semi-private forum at YAAPS.

Semi-private means ALL LOGGED IN USERS CAN SEE THE FORUM. One must simply register (and registrations are not "approved") and then the forum is visible to them.

It is not private, anything posted in there would be visible to anyone who takes the time to register and log in.

Per YAAPS policy this poll will close after 7 days which is 2/19/08.

Thank you for your participation.

I don't see what the benefit is, and I don't see what the objection is. I just don't really get it. So I voted "other," meaning that I don't care.

Either way is fine.

I always log in before I read, so it wouldn't affect me.

I voted "no" because I'm afraid it would be a slippery slope...next people might want to start requiring some approval process for registrations because she was afraid her mother in law would register or something... lol.

I voted no as well. This was an agreement Kerry and I had at the beginning of YAAPS.

I'm a "whatever you guys wanna do" vote ;) Seriously, it doesn't bother me either way!

I haven't voted yet, because I don't really understand the pros and cons. Plus, I do want to respect that Debra and Kerry are strongly opposed.

There have been so many discussions about so many things and I stopped reading some heated and convoluted threads to gain some space, so. . .

Could someone please link us here in this poll to where people discussed why they were strongly for or strongly against it? So it's easy to find?

Thanks.

It does not matter to me one way or the other. It would be more inconvenient to me because I do not always log in when I stop by yaaps. It is really superfulous in my opinion because anyone who cares enough not to lurk is going to see it. But it s not hidden, certainly not private and no secret handshake soriority membership is necessary to view it.

I really don't care if it is there or not.

Here is the C&P to what I said to Annie, explaining why I don't want a private forum. This is in addition to just the principle of the matter, as Debra mentioned above.

[QUOTE]A) Having forums that are private except to registered members gives the impression that we're exclusive. There are MANY people who lurk here, but for whatever reason, aren't comfortable registering a username. Or they CAN'T register a username. I still want the site to be open for everyone to read/lurk. I know there are certain people who have a need or preference for a secure place where they can talk about issues they don't want the world to see. YAAPS has NEVER presented itself as being that place, and the compromise we came up with is the ST username.

B) When I'm at work, there are certain computers at which I cannot log in. That means that if we have a private forum that's visible to registered members only, I won't be able to read those forums at work.

I voted no because while I disagree that it's a bonafied "private" forum (aka, the icky AMU private forums), I recognize that others either feel it is, or is at least slippery slope to one. And since I see no huge benefit to having one I don't want something around that's making another yaapster twitch or worse, leave.

AND also because of the hassles it would cause to others in how they read the forums, as Kerry pointed out.

I don't care about this one, so which ever way it goes, is fine with me.

I think having one violates not just one principal of Yaaps, but multiple principals of Yaaps very being and soul.

It's not just a matter of a slippery slope in membership and access, but a slippery slope of compromising our values completely.

Voted other for the same reasons.

This is one I feel so strongly about that if we had a consensus process I'd be on the table screaming my head off to block it.

I don't think I could ever be comfortable here if we started this move to any kind of private forums. It just goes against the grain of what I've come to think of as yaaps.

YAAPS is the first forum I've belonged to a that is a true community forum. Past YAAPS threads, along with the feelings expressed here, tell me that many of you had very bad experiences with private forums. Semi-private view isn't quite the same, but it's still restrictive. The objections many of you have expressed are good enough for me.

I guess I am not understanding why we should have one. Think I will start a post and someone can explain it.

but I fail to see what the purpose would be as anyone can sign up and get a user name therefore anyone could see the forum. If it would make people more comfortable though I don't have issues.

We had a total of 78 votes.

55.13% of people do not want a semi-private forum at YAAPS. I will delete the dummy-test forum now.

Thanks to all that voted!
