I wanted to set a fitness goal that was not number related, so a few months ago I signed up for a 10k (6.2 miles). I debated trying to run it, but I decided that for my first race experience I just wanted to a) have fun, b) walk briskly, and c) finish- and I did all three! This race is WACKY- it's done on this really beautiful, tree-lined street lined with historic mansions, there are live bands set up all along the course, people run/walk the race in costumes (there's actually a prize for this), tons of people on the sidelines. In spite of the wet, soggy, drizzly morning my spirits were high and I really enjoyed myself.
I'm addicted. :D I've been in awe of Robin/jumpforjoy's accomplishments as a badass racin' mama ever since coming to Yaaps, and I feel like I took a teeny weeny baby step on my own badass path, lol. I'm already thinking about what race to do next.... and maybe this time I'll run. :help:
WTG!!! Sounds like a BLAST!

Go, you! That is awesome. And I had no idea about the bands along the way and the costumed part of the race. That would make it so fun. Anyway, I think it is really cool that you did a 10K.

Congrats!
I am going to start walking/running again this spring--or at least I hope to. This post has inspired me to join a few races that encourage walking as much as running.
Robin's athletic pursuits have inspired me greatly as well, especially because she has shown that someone can overcome an "unathletic" childhood (and mindset) in order to meet personal fitness goals. And her achievements have helped me embrace "mind over matter," too.

Y'all are so sweet. Thank you! I feel the need to confess that my butt is sore as all get-out today. :moon: I felt fine this weekend... did my endorphins just wear out or what, lol?

YAY! You know, I am a recovering perfectionist and I *really* struggled with whether or not it would be "worth it" if I "only" walked it... but I felt like in order to make this a goal I could stick with for life, it HAD to be a small, baby-step goal. Far enough out of my comfort zone to bring me satisfaction when I achieved it, but not SO FAR that it felt insurmountable or that required a huge amount of training/preparation that I could not realistically commit to.
What you said about mindset is SO TRUE. It's paralyzing to be stuck in the mindset of "I'm not athletic".... I've always looked wistfully at people who ran marathons, thinking that I could never do that. Well, sister, it won't be happening anytime SOON, lol, (I have 999 more steps on this journey) but yeah I can see myself running a marathon one day. One step at a time, baby!

Ah yes, the joys of Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS). From Wikipedia:
Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is the pain or discomfort often felt 24 to 72 hours after exercising and subsides generally within 2 to 3 days. Once thought to be caused by lactic acid buildup, a more recent theory is that it is caused by tiny tears in the muscle fibers caused by eccentric contraction, or unaccustomed training levels.
It's very common after a race, and often peaks a couple of days after the event. Wear it like a badge of honor! :yay:
