I'm just curious how the community is using the forums; I think somewhere someone indicated that she thought no-one used linear so I thought it would be interesting to see how members are using the forums.

Hybrid, hopefully only temporarily, at which time I would go to full time linear. Love the quote feature so much more than treaded discussions.

linear. only because i don't like how the threaded or hybrid is done. If I click on a post, it only finishes off that branch and I can't continue on through the thread. sort of defeats the purpose for me.

I voted "other" because I don't really like any of them at the moment. I am hoping that the threaded or hybrid mode can be greatly improved somehow. I hate linear view because I hate having to read all the posts to see if someone's talking to me; quoting doesn't make that any more tolerable for me.

I am using hybrid for now. But since your OP asked what I "prefer" I answered other. My preference doesn't exist here.

I'm using hybrid, but I'm not sure I prefer it. What I don't like (and I don't know if it's different in the other choices) is that I can't tell what I read. Maybe I'm just dumb though. After all I'm just the assistant regional manager.

I think that the REGIONAL Manager would be able to help you with that. Did you check the employee handbook?

If you use the little blue arrow on the thread off the forum (where you see all the threads listed) you will be yanked (ala floo powder) to the point you last left off in the thread (i.e. your first new post). I could SWEAR that another vB forum I use does this automagically but I haven't yet found it. Or it could just be a phpBB forum and not vB.

Same here. I use hybrid, but I'm not liking it much at all so far. Trying to tweak and get used to using it, though.

Really? Clearly I should have known about the magic little blue arrow! Off to try this....

I'm finding I like linear, because it puts all the posts I haven't read yet at the bottom. And I love the little blue arrow that takes me right to what's new. At other sites with linear threads, I tend to leave lots of tabs open to the thread I'm following. When I'm ready to read, I'll note the last post, refresh, and scroll up to where I left off and start reading. The arrow is a lot easier way to do the same thing.

I view in hybrid, but I really just look at the linear part of it, unless I want to reply to a reply. Then I go up the the threaded bit at the top and click on the post I want to reply to.

I'm with Tasia - none of these really work well for me and while I am deeply grateful for all the work Debra, Mandi, Anne & Sadie have put into this, I do miss the YAAPS "birds'-eye view" terribly.

I can tell what I've read... When I look at a forum, the ones with bold have new stuff. I use the little blue arrow in a box and that jumps me (in linear view) to the first post I haven't read yet. Then I read them all and when I look again, that thread's not bold.

Of course, there's no option to just mark SOME of them, but there really wasn't before, either--it was the whole forum, or not at all. Now I can "mark" by thread ... sort of.

Same here, I can't really get used to any of it. I keep playing around and switching between the 3 and I still haven't figured out one that I like.

Just another option. :)

I voted other because I dunno. Ask me in a week or two. Hopefully I'll have this figured out by then.

I'm still just very confused and am flipping around among all three views trying to figure out which one works for me. I'm very glad we're all here together but I very much do miss the old forum setup. I'm not sure how I'll ever stay caught up with the forums at this rate.

and am having a very hard time nagigating and following anything. It's very frustrating, especially since I'm usually in and out briefly - I don't feel that I'm catching what I want to catch.

In the old yaaps I was always able to tell which posts in the threads I had read. I looked at them all threaded, and the posts I hadn't read yet were in bold. I could just sort of glance at them and see. I imagine that I'll get used to this too and find a way around. Or maybe not. I know that I'm missing way more stuff than i did in the old days.

And I'm still looking for this magic blue arrow.

I dunno. Quite honestly, there's a good chance that I'll not get as invested in the discussions here as I did in the old days, just because it's not as foolproofly easy for me to follow them.

I don't know what this blue arrow is. I see one thing that's a blue box with a white arrow. When I click on that it takes me to the last post. But it's the absolute last post, not the last one I saw.

I prefer linear. It's how I read my other boards. Right now, I am trying out the hybrid style but I really don't care for it as much. I won't ever use straight threaded. I don't like it at all.

Hybrid. Hybrid. Hybrid. :)
I hate to sound like a bitch, but if yaaps ends up Linear only I will probably not post much if anything at all.
I am a member at another site that is vB with the Linear format and I read a bit (because it's all homeschooling info in one forum) but almost NEVER post because of it.
I would be terribly sad if Yaaps went that way.

I can never tell who someone is replying to, unless they do the quote thing.

In Hybrid, up at the top in the threaded preview part there is an actual LINE which connects the reply to the post that is being replied to.
Very handy. :)

Oops, I thought you were saying that you couldn't tell who was replying to who(m?) in Hybrid. The Subject line of posts are so small that I usually don't even notice them! :)

I think I am at a point right now where I love threaded. I like that I can quickly see who is responding to whom and when I click on the message to read I can do a quick reply without having to click on the name of the person I am trying to respond to like in hybrid. I'm also a subject line junkie. Gotta love that pop up that give you more of the message!

This is how I view the other forums I go to that are in Vb. I like it.

I'm working really hard at this new format but it's very challenging for me. I've never been able to feel comfortable in it anywhere else. I'm giving it my best shot, though. I still feel like I'm kind of swimming, and I'm certain that I'm missing an awful lot.

And while I finally did find that little blue arrow, I can't make it work in a way that's useful to me. And I posted a question about it, but it was back in some other giant thread that I can't remember the name of now.

Oh, found it - no answer, though. I think it's not actually going to be helpful, since it only takes me to the most recent latest post in a thread, and ignores other posts that have been made in different parts of the thread since my last visit.

If you look at the threaded part at the top, it should show you all of the ones that you haven't read yet. (well, it should, anyway).
In that little threaded section the little square to the left of each post is orange (or yellow? I can't remember) if it's new to you.

Oh, and I hear you. I don't like this software at all...I'm trying to find ways to make it work for me but it's hard.
