We went through a mortgage broker when we bought our house. There were no last minute surprises. The mortgage was sold to Sun Trust Mortgage and we've been fine with their service (nothing noteworthy).

My last house was through Countrywide, and they DID throw in a surprise 2 hours before closing (they informed us that they were going to require flood insurance, and we had to come up with an additional $1400 cash in 2 hours).

We've always gotten mortgages with our credit union and I could not be happier. Because:

1. They had the lowest interest rate around
2. No points
3. Very low closing costs
4. No surprises
5. They've never sold a single mortgage
6. Fantastic personal customer support
7. I bank with them and it's been simple to have payments automatically deducted and to make extra payments online
8. They suggested a home equity line of credit, which we got at the same time as the mortgage, and that's been very convenient.

We used a mortgage broker, and then it was sold to Chase.

No surprises or anything, the only problem I have is when I need to talk to someone, it takes me a while to talk to someone in the states who I can understand when they talk. So the minute I leave the automated system and a breathing person picks up the phone I say "I need to speak to someone in the US, please"

With whom I have been happy up until yesterday! They changed a policy without notifying either their phone reps or their customers, but now that it is clearly stated, it makes sense and can be dealt with. A little asterisk on the monthly statement would have gone a long way towards customer happiness!

This mortgage is a re-fi done 5 years ago for a lower interest rate. We went through a broker and it was all very straight forward and clear (72 hour approval, papers signed in our home, etc). We had gone through a different broker when we purchased and had Countrywide and they were fine for the 4 years we had them.

We got a priceline mortgage, and it was really smooth. It has been resold a couple of times, and now Wells Fargo holds it.

We're with Countrywide currently, we refinanced with them about 5 years ago. We haven't had any trouble. Before them, we had GMAC and no problems there, either.

Virtual Bank and we really felt they went above and beyond. They really offered good, creative solutions for us when we were trying to avoid carrying two mortgages like we did the first time. They didn't try to tempt us with any of the "predator" type loans like some of the others did when we approached them.
Once our house sold we no longer needed to carry a jumbo loan so we switched to Charter One since we do our regular banking with them and have always liked them.

This has been our experience as well (except we haven't done number 8). We really like using our credit union for our mortgage, as well as our car loan, personal loans, lines of credit, etc. They have been very good to us!

We used a local broker, and loved them. It was promptly sold (as expected) to Chase Home Finance, and I've had no problems with them. We do have to walk into a branch to pay if we don't give it enough time - the first time I paid my mortgage I mailed it a couple days before it was due (and plenty of time before the 14-day grace period), and it showed up 19 days later and I was charged a late fee. So I don't mail it. I pay it online or if I run out of time to do that and be prompt, I walk it into a branch. No further problems since then.

What I really love about it is that I can just transfer money out of our checking account and pay the mortgage instantaneously.

We use our CU for pretty much everything (checkings, savings, money market, credit card) and have always had excellent customer service.

We had a VA mortgage, it was our first home so I have nothing to compare it to but there were no last minute issues. I wasn't even present for the closing. All went smooth and I've no issues in the past 5 years. They're located in Mt. Laurel FWIW. :)

Have I told you before that I grew up very, very close to Mt. Laurel? (I'm assuming you mean Mt. Laurel, NJ)

Us too. We once had a car loan through Wells Fargo and I'll NEVER use them again. They LOST a $17,000 pay off check we'd sent to them CERTIFIED mail (Thankfully) It was hell and they refused to accept any responsibility for losing the check they had SIGNED for.

Ours is through a small, locally owned bank that doesn't sell off their mortgages. We originated the mortgage with them, and refinanced with them a few years ago and got a superdedooper low rate. No complaints, I'd go through them again if we had to.

however, we will most likely do our re-fi this summer with Navy Federal as I received a very nice 25-year member certificate to use on a re-fi.

We are with Countrywide, and haven't been here long, but were happy with how responsive they were and how quickly our FHA loan went through. We intended to use WellsFargo, and TBH, their service SUCKED. They bounced us through reps several times, were not at all timely in giving us a Good Faith Estimate, and did not answer questions. We were able to pay down points with Countrywide, getting a much lower interest rate with the same down payment/ closing costs. We were told that our loan was one of the fastest closing FHA loans our escrow holder had ever seen. The sellers were thrilled, and as a 8 mo pregnant, first time homebuying, moving out of state mama, I was too, that it went so smoothly and without a hitch.

National City Bank, where we do all our banking. I really like them for everything. We've only bought one house, but have re-fied several times as well as taken out a couple HE lines. Things have always gone smoothly. Which I contribute to us having a relationship with the bank and bank people to begin with.
