ah, yep. But what great results! I tell you, few people seemed to really believe that diet is my #1 skin care weapon. My #1 "anything" weapon, pretty much. But it's true!!

hope you're back on track asap, PA.

Thanks Bonny :) It's hard, because now I'm dealing with the freaking cravings all over again.

We went back on today. For breakfast we had 2 scrambled egg whites with 1 yolk, 2 slices of canadian bacon, 6oz V8 juice and 2 cups coffee with splenda and nonfat nondairy creamer. I'm still at only about 6lbs lost, Mike has lost so much he had to take his wedding ring off because it kept falling off.

I'm going to start back to the Y tomorrow (I did 3 days last week, but then the hospital thing with Mom) The only reason I didn't go today was because it's Aidan's first day back from spring break and I had to get back into that routine.

Do you think you're looking at yeast, or a gluten thing? nt

Peggyann

I'm not sure yet, but I had both of those thoughts. When I get to phase II, I'm going to add back fruit, but not wheat stuff. So if I add the fruit back and everything is all good, then I know it's possible it's probly the gluten. If I add back fruit but no bread and all the bad stuff comes back, then I'm thinking yeast.

Spin-off question. Can a vegetarian (egg free) do SB? nt

Peggyann
03-31-2008, 12:38 PM
ummmmmmmmmmmmmm,,,,

I don't know.

:bag:

I guess you could do tofu scrambles and stuff. Do you eat fish? (like tuna?) I know some of the fake stuff (garden burger , morning star farms, is ok,,,so long as it's not the breaded stuff)

so for my breakfast, I have 2 scrambled eggs and 2 slices of canadian bacon. You could have the equal amount of tofu scramble and some kind of "facon"

I found this site (http://www.south-beach-diet-101.com/learn/south-beach-diet-vegetarian.html) as the first item when I googled "South Beach Vegetarian." It sounds do-able! There were tons and tons of other hits, too.

No sugar *at all* At least until my body gets balanced. One of the things that he said to me, that I've also noticed a difference with, was No Splenda. He said it's poison. It was really hard for me, the first 2 days when I was detoxing, I felt like I had the flu it was so bad. But after about a week I was OK and now it's been about a month and a half and I don't even miss the sugar anymore. YMMV, but I wanted to throw that out there that the Splenda may not be so great as a substitute.

I've been wondering if I could go off sugar, except that I do eat a lot of fruit, and there's sugar in that, and also like PA there's the question of coffee. I've been thinking of switching to Teeccino exclusively, which gets its sweetness from figs, dates and roasted carob, but I wonder if that would be just the same as sugar. I've also been using agave nectar in my coffee and I wonder if that's not good. Plus I use light silk soy milk, which has sugar in it.

Ugh, cutting out just added sugar isn't so bad but I can't get up the enthusiasm for all the rest of it.

I love a lot of half and half in mine, and I've realized it's a Really Bad Thing for me on several levels. I am seriously considering hot herbal tea for the thing to drink, with a No-Doz . . . and wean off that.

I've been steering clear of sugar most of the time lately, just because my preggo body has been craving other things, and I've noticed a lot of differences with my health when I do have sugary things.

First of all - if I have *any* sugary/sweet treats, I crave more. If I don't have any - I don't really care. It's that first candy that is put right in front of your face - if I resist, I'm cool, if I don't - I'll just want more more MORE!

Second - my skin is way better with little to no refined sugar in my diet. Fewer zits, and the dark circles under my eyes are much less pronounced.

Third, and most interesting - I have pregnancy heartburn/stomach discomfort ONLY when I eat sugar. Spicy foods, copious pickles, milk products - all fine! But toss a candy bar down my gullet and watch me bloat and suffer!

(you'd think I'd be smart enough give all that to stay far far away, right?... Hmmmm... Working on it.)

So how have some of you coped? I don't make it through day 1 with the headaches and dizziness.

Peggyann

I don't know. I just did it. I kept in mind the health my Mom has at only 54. The fact that she, her mother, her father and 2 of her 3 brothers have diabetes and heart disease. Or my neighbor that is 53 and has diabetes so badly that she has to walk with a walker due to the pins and needles in her feet and legs.

My Mom had her first heart attack at 45. That's only 14 years away for me.

Yikes!

I just get wrapped up in all that I need to do and want to feel okay right now. I'm not very patient.

All this time I've imagined that your mother is "elderly"...like in her 70's or so...you know, like my mom. That is because...ummm....I am 52! Geez, I'm nearly as old as your MOTHER  !

Again, as I read your posts about your mom and her friends, they sound like they have a lot of health issues or mobility issues. That is very young to be having such issues. If there's anything to motivate you to stay on SB, it's so you can be healthy as an old person! Except for my Lupus I am fit, but I'll tell you, that one little inconvenience (Lupus) is enough to shock one into realizing how fragile your health is! Don't take it for granted!

Back before kids, I was a sweet coffee drinker, and at some point I decided I was going to wean myself off the sugar and learn to like my coffee unsweetened (with milk/cream still). It took a few weeks of gradually putting less sugar in, but at the end of it I was truly liking unsweetened coffee with just dairy. I recently started drinking coffee again after 10 years of no caffeine, and I still genuinely like it unsweetened. (I have to actively measure/limit the half & half, but that's do-able.) Just thought I'd put that out there as a possibility for coffee lovers trying to give up sugar/sweeteners. It worked for me. Coffee with just dairy is yummy. :coffee:

I never thought that I could do something like this, but when I was faced with doing it or dealing with the health consequences it immediately looked easier. ;) Coffee was hard for me to give up, but I also realized that my dependance on it and the splenda and splenda creamer in it wasn't such a good thing :embarass:

Fruit was hard too. But again, for me anyway, it was also a big part of the problem. ;)

The first day, I had to work, so I had about 1/2 the coffee, creamer and Splenda I was used to, to get through the morning and then nothing after that. I made sure to start on a Friday, (because I knew I wouldn't feel great,) so I'd be home all weekend, and basicly felt like crap the whole time. I'll be brutally honest, and say that it sucked. It sucked bad and it was far worse than I imagined it would be. But that was a huge wake up call as far as how bad my sugar problem was.

I, too, thought your mom had to be in her 70's or older based on her health problems. Oh my goodness, PA, good for you for taking your health into your own hands.

It's crazy, isn't it?? Her birthday is in August, 1953. She's #3 of 5. (1947, 1951, 1953, 1959 and 1961)

I look at pictures of her when she was in her early 20's and she was GORGEOUS. Big brown eyes, jet black hair, olive skin. She said everything went downhill for her when she had a complete hysterectomy at age 27. She was also a severly abused child (sexually, physically, mentally, emotionally,,as was her oldest brother, minues the sex abuse) the only problems she had before her hyst. were soft enamel in her teeth so,,after her hystectomy in 8/80

~ovoectomy in 87
~ ovoectomy in 91
~trichotillomania (all her life)
~ complete nervous breakdown, 1994
~dxd with SEVERE bipolar, OCD, PTSD, anxiety
~complete nervous breakdown, 1996
~1998 heart attack, had stints put in
~2000 heart attack, more stints put in
~2001 had 3 cadaver discs put in her neck, due to DDD
I can't remember the rest of the years, but she was also
congestive heart failure
dxd with pre diabetes
fibromyalgia
spinal arthritis
she's had surgery on her elbow for a bone spur
she's had 2 surgeries on her right foot because of a bone spur that sliced her achilles tendon
she has a staff and strep infection on her skin that she can't get rid of, all over her arms and trunk
she has yeast CONSTANTLY, thrush like a nursing baby all in her mouth.

She takes over 25 pills a day.

I refuse to be like that.

I'm sure I left stuff out.
