I need some new ideas for meals, and I'd really like to be eating more vegetarian. What are your favorite vegetarian cookbooks? And would you suggest buying them (you love most of the recipes) or getting them from the library (they have a few gems)?
We just bought Moosewood Restaurant Simple Suppers this afternoon, but I'd like to get a few more. Is Madhur Jaffrey good? Can anyone recommend a good vegetarian Thai cookbook? I'd like to do more Thai.
Thanks!

One of my favorite cookbooks, period, is Vegetarian World of the East Cookbook by Madhur Jaffrey. I haven't checked out her newer vegetarian cookbook but I'm guessing it's also really good (I have several other non-veg cookbooks by her as well). I also love The Indian Vegetarian by Neelam Batra - modern twists on classic dishes. The naan recipe in this book is absolutely perfect: chewy yet tender and flavorful. Oh, and anything by Jeanne Lemlin, who has a whole host of vegetarian cookbooks. I have an oldy, Vegetarian Pleasures, that's a bit dairy heavy but has some wonderful recipes, but I've borrowed other cookbooks of hers and have been really happy. All three you should be able to find at the library to take a peek at and try out.

Fresh From the Vegetarian Crock Pot, How it All Vegan, the PETA one, The Farm one (love it but can't do soy so don't use it much now) and many more.

DH will be forever grateful! He loves naan like nothing else. I've never made it, although I make chapatis and parathas. Guess it is time to branch out! Thanks for the recommendations.

This one is *amazing*. It is a Hare Krishna cookbook bc much of our faith surrounds food, but very little, if anything is written about the philosophy. I can NOT recomend this book enough. In a way, I feel bad that he wrote Hare Krishna in the title bc imo, this has narrowed his market and many will lose out on the extraordinary recipes and writing.

This one is basically an encyclopedia of Indian cooking. The recipes are good, I know the author myself as she is my neighbour at my farm and I have tasted her cooking. If you are looking to really understand the ingredients and essence and history of Indian cooking, this is the one. Again, very little about our philosophy is there. There are stories with each recipe, which is so neat to read.

This one is a small book with over 50 international recipes, all very, very good. It is used in all our temple kitchens and has barely been re-written since first printed. There is a bit more about the Vedic philosophy and that's at the beginning of the book. The recipes are in the back.

These 2 are very good, also and are international. He hosts a cooking show on BBC in England which has been popular for many years. Apart from having to convet measurments, I am very happy with his recipes.

I use all of these cookbooks personally and please note that you won't find garlic, onion and most likely mushrooms as we dont' cook with those ingredients. You can substitute the ingredient listed as Hing or Asafetida with garlic and onion.
Enjoy!
