The discussion has taken place over the past week in this thread http://www.yaaps.com/forums/showthread.php?16933-OFFICIAL-BRAINSTORMING-THREAD-ABOUT-HOW-POLLS-ARE-RUN-open-until-3-8-10 regarding the length of time a brainstorming thread should take place prior to the posting of a poll. Please read before voting as there are several good points supporting each option.

Per the discussion in the linked thread, we are going to limit discussion to the brainstorming thread and keep the poll for voting only. If there is an error or information left out of the poll for any reason, I imagine a pm to the poll creator would suffice in getting that corrected.

I will post a seperate poll about how long poll threads should remain open for voting after the completion of this thread, as I am sure that the outcome of this one may factor in to some members' decisions. Seeing as how we have yet to determine the length of time a poll should be open, I will keep this one open for 72 hours.

*The decision was that brainstorming threads should be open for 7 days prior to a poll being posted.

I voted 7 days and I just wanted to give my reasoning for this for others to consider. Some YAAPsters are more active during the week and some are more active over the weekend. 7 days gives both factions a chance to keep up with whats going on. If a brainstorming thread started on a Monday, and is only open for 5 days - our weekend warriors may miss it entirely or at lesat not be able to give it any measurable attention, yk?
I think we are going to try out the new convention of limiting the poll itself to voting.

Can you put end date on this poll-- like maybe 5 days? or are we going to vote on that too?

She said it will be open for 72 hours. I assume after that we will vote on how long to keep polls open given that the discussion will be open for X days.

It seems as if the consensus is that brainstorming threads should be help before posting polls and the brainstorming thread should remain open 7 days prior to the posting of a poll. I will now post the poll about the length of time that a poll should be open for.

When is this poll supposed to close? I thought this was the one you needed edited, and when I opened the edit function, it automatically reset the field to be open indefinitely. I can close it, or set it to close X number of days from now.

This poll should be closed now. I didn't know how to set a close date on it when I created this one.

QUESTION...I'm confused. 14 people votes for 7 days, but 19 other people voted for other options. Do the votes go that whichever option has the most votes wins, or there has to be a majority (in the first case, 7 days "wins" but in the second case, there isn't a majority of votes for that option, iykwim). I'm relatively new here in terms of how voting operates, so please forgive my ignorance on this!

Well, IMO, when you have several choices like this and one is a clear leader by more than double of the next option, I think that is a winner. But, if you feel differently, run with it, I am d.o.n.e.

No, no, no! I don't feel any which way about it at all! I was just wondering how it worked because there've been so many different terms thrown around about the voting ("majority" and "consensus" and debates about what that all means) that I was just confused and looking for clarification. It was not my intent to suggest that you weren't doing it "right!" LOL. OMG. I'm sorry if it came across that way.

No, that is quite alright. And, my opinion is just that, my own. Other people may think differntly. I sure hope I did not come off as bitchy as I think I did; I am just tired of the damned if you do and damned if you don't feeling around all of this and want it to be settled and done with.

the poll on how long polls should be open is tied neck and neck at 5 and 7 days. With either winner, this poll should be closed now (as it has been open over 7 days) and the admins notified of the results. Brainstorming threads should be open 7 days.

Jessica, would you edit the title of your OP so that the poll results stand out as the OP (that way we don't have to search through threads for the results, but instead simply view the titles). Thanks!

Actually, the poll about how long polls should be open for is not yet closed. It will close at 1:01 pm EST today, as that was 5 days from the time that the poll was created. It has only been open not quite 5 days now. Yes, I will edit the title once a 'winner' is declared when the poll closes. :)

I'm closing this thread since the poll is now closed. If you'd like to comment further, please start a new thread and link to this one.
