View Full Version : Typing programs/games for a 9yo? Or I guess it's called keyboarding now? And math, too, while I'm here

R is developing habits that might not be so great for her in the future as the writer she wants to be.
But what do I know.. maybe her way works best for her? :dunno:
Still.. I'm thinking it couldn't hurt for her to learn the traditional way to type.. then she can ditch it later if she thinks her way is better.
Any recs for a game like program.. she's all about computer games.
Also, I'd like some recs for computer math programs that are game like and offer math facts practice.. .addition, subtraction, multiplication & dividing.
TIA!

My 8-yo loves the Sponge Bob typing program.
Once you have some basic typing skills down and want to practice for speed, addicting games dot com has a really fun program called typer shark - I even really love to play it :) But it doesn't teach you how to type/what fingers to use like the Sponge Bob one does. (ETA oops it's not addicting games it's Popcap (http://www.popcap.com/games/typershark)!)
Math - Margie turned us on to this site and we love it - I sit with them all the time and do stuff on here. Jaden's all about moving around those manipulatives into the ones, tens, hundreds right now, and we're doing lots of tangrams and mastermind and the like. National Library of Virtual Manipulatives (http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/vlibrary.html)
We also love Multiplication.com (http://www.multiplication.com/interactive_games.htm) and Fun Brain Math Arcade (http://www.funbrain.com/brain/MathBrain/MathBrain.html) for facts practice-type stuff.

We used a couple Scholastic products- Type to Learn. They were set up like games and you moved from level to level.

My son has been using this typing website. It's pretty hilarious.

We have Typing Instructor. I'm not sure why we didn't get the "for kids" version, though. Here's a link to reviews http://typing-for-kids-software-review.toptenreviews.com/?ttreng=1&ttrkey=type+to+learn&gclid=CPz1-8v8r5ICFRTNiQodx19sNA We bought ours from Scholastic (they have both versions) but I've seen them at Target and other stores.

I downloaded a trial version of Typing Master Pro and was astounded at how good it is. I didn't get the full version because I'm testing in the 60's to 70's range and they have lots of games included in the trial version. I highly recommend it.

this is the one Abel uses at school- he loves it, and it really does help him pick up the right way to do it.
