We're nearing the end of our cell contract and I use mine very rarely. I'm pretty sure that I would save a lot if I just got a phone where I just pay for the time I actually use. What are the major differences between Virgin, Tracfone, and all of the other options? What should I look for or be careful about?
Is there a way to keep my phone number with a pay as you go phone??

Jason hasa Tracfone but for us it was the only prepaid that we knew had fairly reliable coverage in our area. He doesn't use it much at all, he's still got nearly 90 minutes on it and it doesnt renew till May. Then I"ll add another 60 for $20 and he'll be way ahead of the game.

I'm switching to from a TMobile contract to a TMobile pre-paid in May and I will be able to keep my phone number.
I know with Sophia's prepaid, once we bought a certain amount of time the minutes will never expire as long as we add a $1 a year, so I bought $100 worth over the course of several months and now as long as I add $1 a year those will never expire.

The minutes break down to be very expensive compared to the minutes from a cell phone plan.
We had a pre-paid cell phone plan about 3 years ago. It was fine, but the cell phone plan I have through the phone company is cheaper than what I was paying for the pre-paid. I don't know if your phone company does this, but ours offers a really good deal if you bundle it with your home phone account.

That's a really good thing to check and I hadn't thought of it. Unfortunately it turns out that our phone company (which is also our internet and cable provider) has a really lousy coverage area for their cell service.
