Would you or have you with a short haircut? I have tried for TWO YEARS to get somebody, anybody, to cut my hair the way I want. I have taken pictures in, I have described to endless detail, I have carried my LAPTOP into the salon ! And they just can't seem to get it. I don't want a soccer mom cut. I want this fun quirky do. I think they think I'm crazy and must not Really want it...So, I walk out with a soccer mom do. GAH! My husband's best friend's mom is a hairstylist and she charges MUCHO money for cuts. Several months ago she had me come in to cut my hair "on the house". I thought, GREAT! Here's someone who is highly trained, she works in a fairly trendy salon (Although has it's fair share of little old country club ladies), charges a bazillion dollars for a cut, and GETS it..Plus, she KNOWS me. Should have worked out, right? SOCCER MOM hair do !! GAH!
So, I'm at the point where I have scissors in hand and I'm ready to do it. I've cut other peoples hair before, but my own? Not much further than bangs. Madison is at the ready to help me with the back (ACK! Now, there's some trust there, I'm telling ya!!)
So tell me...Have you ever braved this? Did you have to wear a hat for 6 months?
Let me hear it...before I start snipping....

I've cut C's hair all his life and I used to cut XH's hair, but I've never cut my own. (I think guy hair is easier than girl hair!)
Is it possible that the fun quirky do doesn't work with your hair but instead comes out looking like soccer mom hair or are they just way off even at all?

WAY off...they always end up cutting me with some variation of a bob. I don't want a bob and never ever describe or even show them a bob. Weird, really. I also want cute, spiky , shortish bangs..I can't even walk out with real bangs ! How funny is that?

I pretty much always cut my hair. But it just usually gets too long so I chop off a couple inches. My hair is wavy enough that you can't really see if it's a little uneven and it usually looks OK to me. The last few times I cut off a ponytail so I could donate my hair. Once I went to a salon to fix the hack job I did and I came out with pretty much a soccer mom do. My facebook pic is from when I cut it the last time pretty short and I was kind of proud of how it looked. But it's a crappy picture. I use a hair gel I make out of geletin to style my hair or spike it up a bit.

Not when it was short. But...what's the worst that can happen? LOL.
Really, it seems that when I go in they see me and seem to register "soccer mom style" and it's like they can't help themselves. I feel for you! I've been in Phoenix for over 4 years and despite Shannon's luck, I haven't been able to find anyone to give me a haircut that makes me happy!

I never did, but I did post a very similar rant a while back ... I wanted short funky hair and never got what I wanted and I went through years of bad hair. I did the same, bringing in countless pictures, spending a 1/2 hour in a consultation before they started cutting, and still not getting anything that was remotely close to what I said I wanted or the picture looked like. I still have bad hair, but it's longer (shoulder length newscaster style) so at least they seem to be able to replicate it better each time.
I couldn't have done a worse job if I had cut it myself, I just never had the nerve.

I haven't had my hair cut by anyone BUT me in about 8 years or so. I just gave up. I always ended up with old lady hair. I wanted kind of fun, funky, messy, and spiky. It wasn't even remotely EVEN half the time when I'd walk out and I'd end up having to cut it the right way when I got home. I can even manage the back. lol. I have been cutting the kids' and friends hair for years and years, so I did have an idea of what to do. I say go for it. Here are a couple of pics that show it pretty well.

Oh, I cut my own hair all the time. I make my DH(very reluctantly...he tells me it feels like some sort of mean test for him to pass lol) cut the back sometimes. BUT, I am SO not attached to my hair. If I mess it up, I have no qualms about cutting it shorter to fix it. Which I had to do once. I accidentally gave myself a bit of a mullet. :bag: But, I whacked a few more inches off and it looked great. That is mt facebook profile pic. Layered, no mullet. :P

I do it all the time. I haven't had my hair professionally cut in 8+ years. If you want to show me the cut I MIGHT be able to give you pointers, but in general, just make sure you have a big mirror to see the back of your head. And for me, I need to keep an open-minded approach to the style, because if it doesn't quite go right, I might need to adjust something. I've had some botches, but the good news for you is that with dark hair any mistakes will be less noticeable. IKWYM about other people not getting it right.

LOL Yes, this is how I am too. I'm not concerned about going shorter, shorter, shorter.... lol

I have twice cut my hair very successfully. The first time was in high school, and I went from shoulder-length hair to short hair. I got sooo many compliments, and people didn't belive I had cut it myself. I could not manage any trimming or upkeep, but the initial haircut was fine, and I was able to go into the "salon" (ha - in my tiny hometown it's not exactly a salon, but whatever.....) and have the stylist trim it w/out losing the shape.
I have also cut my own hair as an adult. It was less drastic, and I had much less feedback. It didn't look like I had fallen asleep and let DS run wild w/the scissors lol, but it just wasn't an amazing change like the high school haircut was.
I have found, with my own hair, that it does have a way it likes to grow/style itself, and sometimes I just can't get it to do other stuff without a lot of work. My hair likes to mullet itself - the bottom layer grows faster than the top, and the top part (as well as growing slower) gets more damage from ponytails, styling, sun, etc, so if I ask a stylist to take off the damaged part, the top part can get waaaay shorter than the bottom part. I HATE this look - I understand that there's nothing objectively wrong with it, it's kind of like the rachel haircut from Friends, I just personally do not like it on me. It's probably that grass is always greener thing lol. I was just thinking yesterday that my hairstyle in my high school senior pics is much too similar to how my hair looked yesterday. It's just what my hair likes to do, and I have very rarely found a hairstylist/haircut that can make it easily change its mind. *sigh* lol
Anywho - when I cut my hair short, I figured I was going short anyway, might as well give it a shot myself. I did ask for lots of input about it (I was so worried it would look like I had done it myself and I just wouldn't realize lol) before I finally relaxed. :)

CUTE!! Short hair is so fun, I wish I could wear it. It's so fast and easy, too.

I cut my own hair all the time, short or long. Sometimes I have somebody cut it for me, but it never comes out how I like, or they cut it thinking I can tame my hair, and I can't.
About a month ago I went from hair down to my bra strap to ear length. I cut it myself, and LOVED the front, and had a bit of trouble with the back, but had a friend help me fix it and it was alright. Then I got the back good and lost the fun shape in the front, now i have grandma hair.
After I first cut it off I ran into a friend who used to cut my hair and she said she had never seen my hair look so good. I told her I cut it myself knowing it would grow back, and hoping to get a cut that woudl let my hair do it's own thing.
Even when I cut my kids hair it ends up a little longer on one side than the other, but not on my own hair. Plus they have STRAIGHT hair which is harder to work with that my wavy/curly mop.

The best luck I ever had was going to a stylist in a funky little salon right next door to a university. Look for people with piercings and many varied colors of hair. They seemed to understand what I most certainly DID NOT WANT and gave me some of the best haircuts I ever had. Sadly the place closed a few years after I found it but at least it gave me hope that my hair COULD look cute!
The other issue I run into is that stylists tend to give me a decent cut and then a HORRIBLE style. Too poofy, too much product, not edgy or piecy enough. Not sure why they do that, but sometimes I can take the basic cut and still make it work.

Go for it. It's HAIR. If you mess it up too, it'll grow back. I'm all about doing odd things to hair. :D

*LOL* I'm in agreement with you. As a matter of fact, I always tell my DH that I really couldn't care less if our kids experiment with their hair...It's not like it doesn't grow back ! *LOL*

Oooo, I like that. I think that is totally doable on most hair types. Really wavy, coarse, or curly hair probably wouldn't work so well though. Go for it!

I've been cutting mine since 1999. On my last cut, Pike cut the back for me. But for me, it's just hair. I wouldn't know a bad cut if it slapped me upside the haid.

http://www.latest-hairstyles.com/bangs/choppy.htmlOoh, I had my hair like that for a bit. I wasn't so good at the piecey aspect (me and product don't see eye to eye) but it was so cute and so easy and fast, I loved it.
I'm excited for you!
And, right now my hair is down to my bra strap just because I don't have a stylist I'm happy with. This thread is making me want to head to the bathroom with the scissors...LOL.
