I am in need of work clothing and am trying to step up my choices to some more interesting items than what I usually wear. I tend to shy away from prints and am very (too) conservative about what I combine/what goes together.
Maybe I've been watching too much of What Not To Wear, LOL, but notwithstanding my snowman shape, I think I can do better. I am 5'2", overweight but not obese, and 48yo. I carry most of my weight in my belly, butt and hips.
What do you think of these?

#4: This one looks comfy but not so sure it would have the intended flattering effect.

#5: I like this one but am not sure I have enough of a waist for it.

I really like all of them except #4. When looking for work clothes (or considering looking for work clothes) I operate under the WWLW ("What Would Lachelle Wear") rule. She is ... my bosses boss. And if there's a negative clothing size, she is it. She is the only person whom I personally know who could pull of #4. I really like the wrap dresses, particularly.

I want to go on What Not to Wear! I like the first 3 dresses. The 4th, while cute, it reminds me of a maternity dress I wore (same color and all) and I swear I still had room in it at 9 months! I'm sure someone could pull it off quite nicely but I know I couldn't (well, unless I wanted to look pregnant!)
I need more color also. I'm not a huge dress person for work though. I prefer skirts, always have. Keep on posting. Who sells those dresses?

Along the lines of our shared figure issues (LOL!) - I've found wrap style tops and dresses to be surprisingly flattering. I say "surprising" because they never really drew me, and so I never had seen what I looked like in them until just the past year or two. Anything with a surplice top is usually a good bet.
I think the #4 dress will indeed be unflattering, sorry! And I like the #5 dress a lot, but would have to try it on and see, those fitted waist things are hit and miss, and I have no eye for judging it on the rack. I can't quite tell if the bodice is surpliced or not, but that would make a difference. (I have a large bust, though - even thin, I'm still a DD cup.) I really like how the collar line on that last dress, how it's narrow in by the neck - almost faux Mandarin, or semi-halter (yet attached to a sleeve.) I have broad shoulders, and things that draw the eye into the midline are good for me in that way. (Not that this is about me! Just sharing figure issues, and what I've found I can/can't wear LOL!!)

given our shared figure issues. Like you, I have discovered wrap tops in the past year or two and am surprised by how flattering they are.
I like the neckline on that last dress, too, and wondered about the surplice factor. I too have broad shoulders (even when thin; I don't wear halters because the effect is just too broad) and biggish breasts. This latter thing is a new development - so to speak - in the past few years and is probably about fat distribution. Also, my breasts seem to be migrating towards my underarms recently, which is strange, but I was fitted for new bras at Nordstrom recently, and that helped. The big boobs thing has been extremely challenging wrt v-necks (I get a *va-va-voom* effect too easily); seamed empire waists (the seam hits me mid-boob, wth?), and most bathing suits (va-va-voom). Who knew?
Thanks!

I ordered all of these, plus a top, for almost $500, LOL. I am 100% sure they won't all work and that I'll return most if not all of them, but in the meantime, DH is sure to have a cow when he checks our VISA bill online.
Rosemary, these are all at Northstyle.com. Hawthorne pointed me there (thanks R.!). I had been ISO a dress or two for work for awhile now and hope one or more of these work!

I mostly avoid halter stuff too, but if it's a choice between narrow shoulder straps (like spaghetti) or halter I find the halter actually gives me a better line - having a strap halfway between neck and shoulder's edge seems to really emphasize how they are practically in different zip codes LOL! I've had really good success with the Land's End suits that are specifically large cup - their DD cup line. They just fit super well, and I don't get any spillage or Unintentional Va-Voomage. I have one tankini top I especially like - it's halter style, with a ring near the cleavage, but lots of coverage otherwise. Someone told me it made me look like a movie star, LOL! (That's not a compliment I get a lot . . . :-P!)

I was going to say, I don't think I could wear #4 without being asked repeatedly if I was "expecting". lol

I have the same issue w/spaghetti straps and you put it perfectly, LOL. I tend to look like a linebacker in them.

What kind of shoes (not sandals) would you wear with them? Sandals are not allowed in my workplace, but I can do open-toed shoes, slingbacks, etc.
This thread is so helpful; thank you!

Well, I'm a big fan of slingbacks so I think they would look great with those dresses. I also liked these, though I'm not sure if some of them are too "sandal-y" (and ignore the prices, I was just looking for styles):

This (http://www.landsend.com/pp/AlloverControlSlenderTunicSwimsuit%7E4235_593.html ) is a full suit, but it is super cute and flattering, and comes in large bust sizes. I've tried it on and really liked it - and Amelia also has one and likes it. She is plump, especially through her middle - but is not large chested, so that's not really a suit requirement for her. Nonetheless, it's a super nice one-piece. It also comes in prints (http://www.landsend.com/pp/AlloverControlPeonySlenderTunicSwimsuit%7E192643_5 93.html).
Alas, the top I have isn't carried anymore :meh: - I'll get one of the girls to take a picture of me in it later, so you can see what I mean, though. I watch Ebay for more of them, because I like it so well!

Another silhouette/cut I've found I can wear are things like this (http://www.northstyle.com/itemdy00.asp?c=08&SKW=Fashion&SKW2=&TKW=&Scat=Y&GEN1=Fashion+Favorites&OR=&parent=1&T1=N8424+S&PageNo=1&pos=2) (that blouse is soooo pretty!!) The bias cut is flattering around the thicker middle, it drapes nicely instead of clinging - and I love that sort of inverted V empire waist, it is nice through the bust, and just generally flattering. The fluttery sleeves are nice too - overly fitted cap sleeves just emphasize the Linebacker thing again.
Two necklines I avoid: ballet-neck (sometimes called boatneck) and square neck.
