OK first I'm sorry I've so absent lately...forgive me? Worse, I'm sorry to post kamikaze style begging for help...but hair emergencies know no pride.
Rachel wants to dye her hair for graduation on Thursday. I kind of wish she did this behind my back with a girlfriend so I didn't have to be responsible for this choice but no such luck. She wants me to dye it for her. Fuck. I really suck at hair stuff.
I spoke to my hair gal and we decided that henna might be the best route; she mentioned that it's important to get the brand without mineral salts - the "all natural" henna. But she didn't remember the name.
Soo anyone know what she's talking about? Or any brand of high quality henna that I could get in a health food store or beauty supply place.

I don't think you'll find henna at a beauty supply at all.
I'm not sure about brand of henna at a HFS. I'd recommend you read here:

I personally buy my henna from here:
http://www.mehandi.com/shop/index.html
I take straight henna, no additives, and mix with lemon juice and let sit in a container at room temp for 12-24 hours before I glop it on my hair, wrap in plastic wrap, and let it sit on my hair for another 2-3 hours.
I love henna! Love the color, love the way it makes my hair feel.

I helped Amelia with henna once, and it was nice looking enough, but OMG, I'm never dealing with that stuff again. I posted about this once, and someone posted back (sorry I don't remember who you are, someone!!) with ideas that might have made it easier . . . so I hope that Someone will try again here LOL! But really, I'm never using it again unless she is willing to do it outside, and get hosed off. It was this all natural dried henna powder, so we had to make it into paste, and then glop it on her hair. It was like trying to coat her hair with horse droppings, I'm not sure how else to describe it.
Actually, I did describe it thusly while applying the stuff, and it did not make the task any easier, because A was subsequently crying with laughter (we were already close to the edge there) . . . oy.
Maybe if this is what she really, really wants, it could be a paid color job, as a graduation present? That's my best advice.

LOL! I would describe it more like mud. When you have mixed the henna, the instructions I use say you want a yogurt-like consistency. I aim for a thick yogurt because I want it to actually stay on my hair and not slip around. :-)

I had the presence of mind to suggest that Rachel try on a black wig (she wanted black) - which thank goodness was available at the beauty supply place where we went to hunt down the hair color.
We left with a box of streaking stuff - it's blond, which goes with her naturally honey/brown colored hair so I'm no too worried at this point.

You are brilliant ! Highlights shouldn't be hard at all, yet still feel like a change/something special for her.
