It's our first family vacation to that area and we are all really excited. It all looks so beautiful and fun, it's been really hard to pick and choose from everything to see. I think we are seeing/staying in Alamogordo, Lincoln Forest near Capitan, Roswell. Some of the things we want to do are see the White Sands Park, NM museum of Space, hike around old train trestles in Cloudcroft, Valley of Fires Park, Three rivers Petroglyphhs, Billy the Kid Museum, Roswell alien museum. I know in 5 days we are not going to get to all of it. Any tips for us? Oh and we'll be camping for most of it.

Sounds fun!! If you have time to get to Ruidoso, I would recommend it. I've only been as a teen but I remember it as a really beautiful area and there's horse racing, too. :-)
Have a great time!

I would love to meet you!! We decided to stay in the lower area this trip but plan to make another trip and go farther north. I will be sure to write you and ask for tips when we do that.
We are driving from central TX, so already a nine hour trip just to get to the Alamogordo area. I know we are missing a lot by not going farther north but didn't want to stress the kids or ourselves out with toooo much driving.

I personally witnessed the haunting by the ghost of Rebecca.
I think White Sands should be a mandatory visit -- especially if you can time it for a visit at night during a full moon.
Have fun -- I love this state.
Edited to add - the Billy the Kid museum is fascinating (in Ft. Sumner, right?) Visit the grave site as well. It started a huge wild wild west research project and fascination for me.
