View Full Version : This is going to sound silly, but what's my style?

I've had to dress up recently for my sister's senior recital and my son's violin recital, and I have a baby shower coming up, and probably other things.

I never thought about dressing up before. My "style" as I think of it is casual. I wear jeans a LOT, and I dress them up to go out to dinner or whatever with pointy-toe kitten heels and a cute top on the dressy side. You know, maybe a dressier fabric, maybe an empire waist and a vee neck, maybe I'll even wear earrings (dangly beaded ones).

Otherwise, I'm wearing jeans and flats and a fitted sweater, or vee neck tee shirt, or yoga pants and a vee neck tee shirt.

Dressing up? I have tons of dressy clothes from working for years in conservative law offices, etc. They are suits. I have always felt like I was playing dress up - pretending to be someone I'm not - when I wore these. They're not "me," you know?

Now it's all too big for me, and so I need some new dressy clothes. I'll probably get them at the thrift store or consignment shop, or on ebay. I'll definitely have to wait until Mike has a job (!) but I want to start thinking about it now. Since I HAVE to buy new ones, as all my old ones are hanging on me, I'd like to buy some dressy clothes that don't make me feel like I'm playing dress-up. No more conservative suits.

A couple things - I don't wear skirts a lot because I don't feel comfortable in them. I'm much more comfortable in a gaucho or wide-legged pant. I like to be able to get down on the floor and no matter how hard I try, I can't be comfy in a skirt doing that (I know some can).

I look good in things that are minimal around the waist (no drawstrings or elastic) - flat front, not a lot of extra fabric. I think that's because I'm very, very short, and my legs are even shorter proportionally. Likewise, I look bad in light-colored bottoms - if I had to pick slacks to wear to work, it was always black or navy or dark brown, never khaki or tan. I look better if I'm somewhat monochromatic, to lengthen the eye, I guess, which is also why I look good in things that have empire waists and vee necks.

I'm about a size six or eight right now, but I'm still losing, and I might settle in at a comfortable six, if I had to guess. 5'0" tall - pale skin, weird greenish-bluish-tanish eyes, glasses (either edgy brown plastic rims or I also have a pair of rimless), short hair, I actually have been told I have an "edgy" look, style-wise, in the past. I love color, especially rich saturated colors like terra cotta, avacado green, mustard yellow, and my neutral tends to be dark brown (though I'm not opposed to black).

Help? Any pictures of what you think might look good on me if I'm "dressed up?" What do you think would look like "me" instead of Carrie Conservative from Columbus? Link me up - I need inspiration!

Why not a fun v-neck top with a pair of dark slacks? I think if you replace your normal jeans with some comfy slacks you can get a dressier look while still sticking with what you're comfortable with.

There's also pants that are cut really wide/loose to look like a skirt, have you ever tried wearing those?
