We're going down to visit my in-laws in Florida in a few weeks. The only thing on the schedule is ditching N with his grandparents one afternoon so J and i can go see this movie.
(And if anyone has any tips on a polite, respectful way to remind my MIL that putting N in the crib to cry it out at naptime is NOT ok, i'm all ears. She's already talking about using our visit there to "tough it out" and teach him some "independence"...)

Because that's what a 6 month old needs - independence. Huh, I bet you don't even let him ride the subway alone, you helicopter parent, you :P

I would expect that if I left my child with this grandmother that he would spend that time crying alone in a crib.

I'm thinking I might be going tonight!
DH is being very sneaky today, I asked him what was up and he tried to hide it...but he has a very specific look that gives him away every time!
When I sat down to my laptop, which he had been using earlier, he forgot to close the Fandango site! LOL
Poor guy...he really, really tries, but he can never keep a secret from me! Kaleb went to mow my SIL's lawn, and Ian went with to play with his cousins. DH is taking Bethany over there "because she wants to go play too." Uh, ya, she likes going over there, but her cousins are a bit younger than her and I know she'd much rather be home after her softball game, than go over there to "play."
I'll find out soon if I was right. LOL

I saw it today and it WAS awesome - Paul, George and I all concurred.
My one major quibble is that Kirk referred to himself as James SIBERIUS Kirk at least twice when his name is James TIBERIUS Kirk. James T Kirk, as he was referred to later in the movie. What's up with that?

05-10-2009, 06:44 PM
I didn't notice that... maybe it just sounded that way with the S in James slurring over the T in Tiberius?
We all concur with everyone as well -- as Ry said this morning, if a bunch of chicks said it was awesome, it must be pretty darn good. :-D I just loved the whole thing... it could have totally gone off the rails, but the stars aligned and a near perfect movie was made.

if it is as good as "Wrath of Kahn"?
I don't think I can compare them.
(Edited because I noticed that the spoiler tag isn't hiding the first sentence in the preview, which isn't really a big spoiler but I didn't want to put it out there and have someone get any preconceptions)
The villain in the new movie is not nearly as strong as Khan, but as much as I love Wrath of Khan, I'd choose to watch the new movie over Khan right now. I think it will easily wear as well over time as the old movie - in 20 years this will still be a watchable movie.
I think it's less cheesy than Khan and more accessible to non-Trekkies. (I don't mean that cheesy is a bad thing necessarily) and I find the reboot of the series really appealing. It's fresh and the acting is better. The story is more disjointed and there are some big plot holes, but it's still really entertaining.

Yeah, I heard "Tiberius" pretty clearly in a couple of scenes and didn't notice a difference anywhere else.
It really is a near perfect movie. Did you see it got 96% on Rottentomatoes? I don't think I've seen a movie go that high before.

I admit that I had read a review beforehand which mentioned it so I was listening for it. The first time was in the beginning when his mother had just given birth and suggested naming him after George Kirk's father, Siberius. Near the beginning when young Jim was introducing himself to the robocop he also introduced himself as James Siberius Kirk.(You can hear it here) YouTube - New Star Trek Trailer - Includes Old Spock (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puXPozd-kuc) After that, every mention was Tiberius.

I think it's just how he said it - I could hear "Tiberius". But he pronounces it by "swallowing" his "T" - like how midwesterners do when we say "curtain" or "mitten" (but it sounds like "cur-in" and "mi-in").

Dh and I saw it Saturday night and loved it (even though we aren't trekkies). We went with some friends, without the kids, but afterward agreed that we wanted to take them. Finn is the same age as Colin and I think he could follow it. But he loves Star Wars and stuff like that, which has similar backward/forward stuff.
I seriously doubt he would be bored. The visual appeal of this movie would keep him entertained, at the least.

I still can't get anyone to go with me and I've had no opportunities to go alone. :sob: I need someone to come kidnap me and take me.
I want to see it on IMAX, it's playing 10 minutes from my house, I can TASTE it (LOL) but....so close yet so far away. I have no chance of going by myself until May 30. Who knows if it will still be in IMAX then.
I am seriously irritated.

Ack, supposedly this is the last week in IMAX. This coming weekend it's being replaced (mostly likely by Night At the Museum?) They might extend it, but so far I haven't heard that.
But it's awesome on the regular screen too! In fact I just saw it again on the regular screen (ok, so obviously I'm obsessed) and loved it just as much.

OMG SO AWESOME!!!!!!
It was made of awesome, basted in awesome sauce and baked in the awesome oven.
That is all.
I finally saw it last night! First let me say, Levi, was so cute.. He's in the camp that there's only 1 good "star" series and that would be the wars. So he wasn't really sure what to make of my excitement.
When we first saw Sarek, I asked if he knew who was playing him. L's answer "Who is Sarek?" I said pointed and said "that guy, Spock's father" and He's just like "but they hadn't said his name... wow, you are a dork!" And there were a BUNCH of moments I chimed in with some interesting (to me) trivia LOL... He had no idea after 6 years that I was a Star Trek nerd!
I then had to explain that you could NOT grow up in my mother's house and not learn these things... My NAME is Amanda T'Pring... he didn't get the relevance til I explained that Amanda was Spock's mother. My Brother is James Tiberious yk? Yeah, I know A LOT about ST!
Anyway.. LOVED LOVED LOVED it. Didn't quite know what to make of the love affair between Spock and Uhura, but I didn't NOT like it. I loved when Bones stumbled in and even more when they found Scotty. (And I *heart* Simon Pegg, so that just made it better!)

I had totally forgotten about your names and Star Trek! I remember now that you had mentioned that before. :-)

I was just proud that I was able to hide my inner dork so well for so long! I can't believe Levi didn't know that about me lol!
