View Full Version : Spinners....where do you/who do you buy your fiber/roving from?
Looking for cheap places in the US to get dyed or un-dyed wool roving. Superwash or not.
I needle felt, rather than spin, so I don't know whether this is good wool for spinning, but I order from R.H. Lindsey in Boston. http://www.rhlindsaywool.com/products/index.htm I've been very pleased with the wool.

I get most of mine from my boss, but if I'm looking for less work (cleaning fleeces is a PITA)
I love love love Bob at Winderwood farm in New York- I found him on ebay and deal with him directly now. He's wonderful and will talk your ear off on the phone :phone::phone:

I do like going to the fiber shows in the spring- Annie and I went to the one in NH a couple of years ago. It's like a megamall crackhouse for fiber freaks. :loveit::knit::knit::knit::knit::knit:

and one the Spring before that. As Lynn points out it is a huge job to get it all prepared to spin, but it is also strangely satisfying.
You get a lot of wool that way too, but I will admit that the person I bought from was very kind since I really could not tell a good fleece from a poor one without more experience. I did not even know enough to ask what kind of sheep it was from. :) Since I still have a good bit to card (and hopefully attempt to dye this time) I am going to hold off getting more this year.

She's got Brown Sheep mill end rovings and grab bags for as little as $7.50/pound plus she's got good prices on other stuff

Is there a particular time of year they occur? Are there any espcially good ones on the east coast to go to?
A friend and I have talked about finding a cheap fare and going sometime. For us, the cheapest airfare is to the east coast, either New York or Atlanta, I think. Are there any good shows there?

Rhinebeck in NY (http://www.sheepandwool.com/)- October
Cummington, MA (http://www.masheepwool.org/)- May, but not worth going to if you're not local, it's SMALL
NH Sheep and Wool- (http://www.nhswga.com/) Mothers Day weekend- Small but fun,
Maryland Sheep and Wool (http://www.sheepandwool.org/) First weekend in May
I've never been to Rhinebeck or Maryland, but I understand they make Cummington and NHSW look small-time. Ok, Cummington is. It stinks. (And it's not because of the smell of poop).
